Amid the freezing December rains and driving sleet, the body of a well-dressed, middle-aged man is found hanging from the girders of a railway bridge. Investigating the case is Lou Perlman, a jazz-loving DS who seems to buy his suits from Oxfam. Perlman has plenty of other jobs he should be working on, but his long experience tells him that this is no suicide, and there's something about it that stirs up half- forgotten memories of his childhood.
As one death is followed by another, he begins to suspect that a dark secret is casting its shadow over his own family, the city and beyond. What he finally discovers will rock the foundations of his whole life.
